Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships, UKThe Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) is pleased to announce the ‘Research Fellowships’ & ‘Engineering for Development Research Fellowships’ for the academic year. Scholars from all over the world are welcome to apply. Fellows will be supported to do research in the field of Engineering.

Fellowship Description

The Royal Academy of Engineering offers Research Fellowships each year to outstanding early-career researchers to support them to become future research leaders in engineering. The scheme’s objectives are to:

  • Support the best early-career researchers in establishing their independence and international reputation.
  • Provide long-term support enabling the pursuit of an ambitious programme of engineering research and impact.
  • Develop ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines

The Academy welcomes applications from early-career researchers worldwide who have been awarded their PhD in the last four years. The scheme provides funding for five years. Each application is capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £500,000 over the five-year period, at 80% of full economic costs. Research Fellowships must be held at a UK higher education institution/university.

Award Value

There are two types of award and each has own benefits as follow:
Research Fellowships:

  • Applications are capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £500,000 over the 5-year period, at 80% of full economic costs.

Engineering for Development Research Fellowships:

  • Applications are capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £500,000 over the 5-year period, at 80% of full economic costs.
  • An additional £25,000 per annum is available and does not have to be claimed at 80% of full economic costs or be match funded by the host institution. This additional funding is ring-fenced to develop international collaborations in order to deliver the research outputs and build pathways to positively impact or contribute to the sustainable economic or social development of a country or countries on the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list.

Eligibility and Criteria

Research Fellowships must be held at a UK higher education institution/university in an engineering department or in a department that can show it is capable of fully supporting an engineering-focused research project and researcher.
