Application now opens for the AUT Doctoral Scholarships for high achieving International Research students to study at AUT University. The award is tenable for three academic years, and two years for Professional Research students.
This scholarship award is fully funded to stimulate studies in the areas of the university’s research capabilities.
Scholarship Description
AUT provides doctoral scholarships to highly achieving doctoral research students to AUT University in order to encourage and stimulate doctoral studies in areas of the University’s research capability. There are two types of Doctoral Scholarships: The Vice Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships, and the AUT Doctoral Scholarships.
From 2019 the Faculty of Culture and Society now offers AUT Doctoral Scholarships (Fees). Application is open to all eligible applicants. Applicants may be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, or International students. Applications open one month prior to the closing date. Grades for the qualifying degree must be available at the time of application. Students awaiting grades must apply in the following round.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for AUT Doctoral Scholarships:
- All eligible International students
- Covid-19: Due to New Zealand border settings current rounds are restricted to NZ Citizens, NZ Permanent Residents and international students onshore (residing in New Zealand).
- Applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements as stated in the Academic Calendar (http://www.aut.ac.nz/calendar) at the time of application.
- Applicants must meet the normal admission criteria for the doctoral programme and have received an Offer of Place (OOP) for the doctoral programme.
- Recipients of this scholarship will have an excellent academic record, strong academic references and have demonstrated the potential for high quality research.
- Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and recipients of this scholarship will normally have the equivalent of a first-class honours. Previous study should include research methodology paper(s) and an independent research project, including the writing of a report on that research.
- The applicant’s proposed field of study must be one where the University can offer supervision. Applicants should contact potential supervisors prior to application to confirm the availability of supervision for their proposed research.
- Preference will be given to new applicants to the doctoral programme at AUT, including those currently in provisional candidature.
- Applicants who have applied unsuccessfully in past rounds may reapply only if there is a change to the information submitted.
Application Procedure
To apply for the AUT Doctoral Scholarships, applicants who haven’t already applied for admission into the doctoral programme at AUT must complete both steps below. If you’re a current PhD student at AUT or already have an Offer of Place to start your PhD at AUT, go directly to step 2.
1) Apply for admission into the doctoral programme at AUT
You need to have been accepted into the AUT doctoral programme to qualify for a doctoral scholarship.
2) Apply for a doctoral scholarship
- Download the AUT doctoral scholarship regulations[PDF, 334.0 KB] and familiarise yourself with the eligibility criteria and the conditions of acceptance.
- Apply through the AUT online scholarships application portal – you need to register and select which AUT scholarship(s) to apply for and follow the rest of the guidelines on the application portal.
