Applicants are hereby invited to the ALBORADA Trust whose scholarships are now open to interested postdoctoral students from the University of Cambridge (or any affiliated institution) and sub-Saharan African institutions across all disciplines. The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund awards grants of between $1,000 to $20,000 which will cover research-related costs such as equipment, fieldwork, travels, and setting up workshops for trainings. Application is open until early September.
Scholarship Description
The Cambridge-Africa ALBORODA Research Fund was created in 2012, with generous support from ALBORADA. The fund aids pairs of researchers (post-doctoral level and above) from the University of Cambridge (or Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, NIAB and British Antarctic Survey) and sub-Saharan African institutions, across all disciplines, to initiate and/or strengthen research collaborations, and encourage training activities and engagement between the two bodies. Applicants from Cambridge apply jointly with applicants from sub-Saharan Africa and co-create the project.

Award Benefits
The Research Fund between $1,000 and $20,000 awarded by Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Trust will cover for:
- Research costs (i.e. reagents, equipment and fieldwork)
- Research-related travel (between Cambridge and Africa)
- Conducting research training activities in Africa (e.g. Courses/Workshops setups)

Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to Cambridge and Africa-based researchers who will co-create a research project.
- Both applicants must be at post-doctoral level or above, and their application must be supported by their Head of Department or equivalent
- Both applicants must have a formal link to a research group/department/faculty in their home institution
- Post-graduate students (e.g. as part of a research project or training visit) may also apply. The Cambridge applicant must be either working at the University of Cambridge, or at a Research Institute affiliated with the University.
- The Cambridge applicants will act as the lead applicant, for administrative purposes, as the awards have to be paid to their Cambridge Departments/Faculties/Institutes.
- The African applicant must be based in a sub-Saharan African Research Institute or University.
Application Procedure
The online application form has been designed to allow both applicants (Cambridge- and Africa-based) to log in, update, save and eventually submit electronically.
- Both applicants must register and complete a saveable online application forms provided on the Cambridge-Africa website. Final submissions should include the following:
- Case for support and a lay summary
- An itemised budget (template provided)
- A letter of support from the department/faculty of the Cambridge Principal Investigator (PI). For the Department of Engineering, a support letter from the Head of Division is needed.
- A letter of support from the department/institute of the African PI.
- CVs (maximum 2 pages) for both the Cambridge and African PIs. The two suggested referees should not be from the same department.
