Religious Liberty Essay Scholarship

The Religious Liberty Essay Contest is now open. High school students in the graduates are invited to apply. The winning students will receive prizes up to $2,000.

Scholarship Description
The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty is pleased to announce the Essay Scholarship Contest. The contest is open to all high school students in the graduating classes of 2019 and 2020. The contest demonstrates critical thinking, using appropriate examples, reasons and other evidence to support position.

Award Value
The grand prize is $2,000 and a trip for two to Washington, D.C. Second prize is $1,000, and third prize is $500.

Level and Area of Studies
High school level in any subject.

Place of Study
In the United States of America.

Eligibility and Criteria
The Religious Liberty Essay Contest is open to all high school students in the graduating classes of 2019 and 2020. There are no requirements regarding GPA, faith, after-school activities or clubs.

Applicants’ Nationality
The U.S citizens are welcome to apply.

Application Instruction
To apply, please writ an essay on the topic as follow:

Several state legislators have introduced bills requiring “In God We Trust” to be displayed prominently in public elementary and secondary schools. These bills encourage placement of the motto in high traffic areas, such as cafeterias and libraries.

Write an essay in the form of a letter to your state representative, encouraging them to adopt or oppose legislation mandating the prominent placement of “In God We Trust” in public schools. Your essay should support your stance, explain whether the proposal violates the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment, and show how such legislation would impact all students and faculty, both religious and nonreligious.
