Beat the Odds Scholarship Program

The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is accepting applications for the Beat the Odds Scholarship Program. The award is available for students currently attending attends a public, charter, or alternative school in one of the five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) of New York City and planning to attend college, university, or vocational school post-graduation.

Scholarship Description
The Children’s Defense Fund of New York (CDF-NY) Beat the Odds Scholarship Program honors outstanding young people who are overcoming tremendous adversity, demonstrate academic excellence and give back to their communities. Each year, through a competitive review process, we select deserving high school sophomores from the New York City metropolitan area for admission into the CDF-NY Beat the Odds program.

Award Value
The winning students will be awarded up to $10,000.

Level and Area of Studies
High school level in any field.

Place of Study
The study will be taken at public, charter, or alternative school in one of the five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) of New York City – USA.

Eligibility and Criteria
To be eligible for the Beat the Odds Scholarship Program, students must meet the requirements as follow:

  • Be a current high school sophomore who attends a public, charter, or alternative school in one of the five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) of New York City;
  • Have overcome significant adversity such as, but not limited to, poverty, disability, homelessness or abuse;
  • Demonstrate participation in school activities, community organizations, and/or employment;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to their community and/or social justice issues;
  • Be nominated or seek nomination for the Program from a teacher, counselor, caseworker, or other adults who can speak to your character;
  • Plan to attend college, university, or vocational school post-graduation.

Applicants’ Nationality
The citizens of the United States are welcome to apply.
